Palmento Giorgio is the farmhouse that Giorgio Palmisano, a farmer who loved his land, built in 1935 in the countryside between Locorotondo and Martina Franca. It was the family home and the palmento, the place where the wine was made. Today his heirs open it to guests: all to yourselves, with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, two kitchens and two terraces, for up to 10 people.
The house covers 245 m², all on the ground floor except for a mezzanine, and all its rooms are connected. The restoration has left the stone cross and barrel vaults exposed and kept the original cement-tile and decorated terrazzo floors. On the walls hang botanical plates from the herbal manual Giorgio wrote by hand.
The heart of the house is the dining room, one large space under cross vaults, with the dining area and a large wooden table, the living area with sofa and TV, and a monumental stone fireplace. The fireplace's glass-fronted hearth can also be seen from the kitchen, an eat-in kitchen under a cross vault with a decorated terrazzo floor. It has an oven, induction hob, dishwasher, fridge, coffee machine and kettle. The dining room and the kitchen each have an arched French door onto the courtyard.
There is also a second living area, an open-plan space under a stone barrel vault with a large arched glass door onto the side terrace. It has a lounge with sofa and TV, a dining area and a second kitchen with island, induction hob and dishwasher: handy when there are many of you.
There are five bedrooms, with exposed stone walls, niches and period floors:
bedroom 1: double bed, antique writing desk and wardrobe; a few steps up from the dining room;
bedroom 2: double bed made of two single beds pushed together, cement-tile floor with a Greek-key border;
bedroom 3: double bed, decorated cement tiles, rattan chest of drawers. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are connected by an internal door, but each has its own entrance;
bedroom 4, on the mezzanine of the open-plan space: double bed under cross vaults, wooden floor and glass balustrade; reached by an indoor staircase;
bedroom 5, in a stone alcove a few steps below the open-plan space: single bed that converts into a double.
There are three bathrooms, all with a shower: two matching bathrooms and a larger one. There are two washing machines, one in the larger bathroom and one in a utility cupboard next to the matching bathrooms.
Every room has independent air conditioning and heating. There's high-speed Wi-Fi, an iron and ironing board, a hairdryer, towels and bed linen.
You enter through a gate into a large white gravel courtyard, enclosed by dry-stone walls, with ancient olive trees and a large walnut tree: this is where you park, and where you'll find the free charging point for electric cars. Two stone terraces open in front of the house:
the main terrace, with a wooden lounge set, a large umbrella and a table for six, sheltered by a pergola with a vine;
the side terrace, with a lounge set, an umbrella and a table for four, overlooking the orchard.
In the small stone building next to the courtyard is the wood-fired oven where Giorgio's wife baked bread, still intact: you can use it for pizza or bread, together with the masonry grill for barbecues. The old stone treading tubs of the palmento are still in the vineyard, and all around are orchards, olive trees and, in the distance, trulli.
The whole property is for your exclusive use: the house, both terraces, the courtyard, the parking and the oven house. The gate closes and there are no other guests. The roof terrace is not accessible.
We welcome you in person on arrival, show you around the house and hand over the keys. Throughout your stay you can reach us by phone and on WhatsApp, for anything you need and for tips on masserie, wineries, beaches and villages.
Palmento Giorgio is on Via Pastore, in the countryside of Martina Franca, about 3 km from Locorotondo, in the heart of the Valle d'Itria, among vineyards, trulli and dry-stone walls. The loveliest towns are a few minutes' drive away:
Locorotondo, with its circular old town and cummerse houses, about 5 minutes;
baroque Martina Franca, about 10 minutes;
Alberobello, with its UNESCO World Heritage trulli, and Cisternino, about 20 minutes.
The beaches of Torre Canne and Savelletri are about 30 minutes away, Monopoli and Ostuni about 35. The Castellana Caves and Polignano a Mare are also close by.
You'll need a car: the house is in the countryside, and private parking is free, inside the enclosed courtyard. Estimated distances:
Locorotondo railway station about 3 km;
Martina Franca emergency department about 5 km;
Brindisi airport about 70 km and Bari airport about 80 km, about an hour's drive to either.
